Jason Fruit, violist

Performance

Jason Fruit has had a multifaceted career as a orchestral and chamber musician, performing across the American Midwest in both capacities. He is influenced by the Hungarian tradition in which he was educated, but increasingly by the bel canto style of late 19th-century string players, especially Eugene Ysaÿe, and by the vocalists who inspired them.

He has lately devoted himself to the viola alta, an enlarged and reproportioned viola with a richer, more powerful, and more brilliant than usual tone, of which he may be the only remaining active proponent. He is engaged in reviving and editing the 19th-century repertoire for the viola alta, and is especially eager to continue commissioning and premiering new works for his instrument: if you are a composer, please get in touch!
